Thanks for this... I have reviewed one product that I was approached by the company (because another blogger gave them my name)

I loved doing the review but am at a total loss at how to host give aways and the like.

maybe I will try this....

The only product I ever *cough* begged *cough* for was Thrive and they did not turn me down! Newman's Own Organics found me from a Google Alert. It definitely pays to talk about the stuff that you love.

Lori I can't believe you were blasted by the owner for giving your opinion on a product you bought yourself! That really tells me that blogging is a powerful tool and companies know it!

Insightful post, Matt. And I enjoy doing product reviews but always try to balance my swag with original content, recipes, etc. But the swag is a nice bonus for what i would consider to be volunteer work, i.e. food blogging :) I know there's a little scratch involved but for me, emphasis on the little :)

I love doing product reviews for the most part. I had one company's product that I reviewed where I just didn't care for the product. Interestingly enough, this particular product was not sent to me for review, I was just giving my opinion on it,as I do with anything I buy. I wasn't mean or anything, I just said I was disappointed. Well, the owner blasted me via email for doing that. I was floored. Apparently they have a google search alert set up to email them whenever their product is mentioned on the internet.

I have a few companies that have sent out products to me unsolicited, which is really fun. I have never approached a company because I felt my blog was too small.

If your site is popular enough, the companies will mail you... if you're doing the asking, make sure you have a sample to show them -- another review or giveaway you did so they can see how it will benefit their company. Some companies are happy to give freebies, but sometimes they want to see whats in it for them before forking over product, especially if its a pricy product.

Oh and if you have advertisements on your blog, you probably can't do reviews or giveaways on pages with ads -- at least thats the case with blogher.
