I always wondered how to track subscribed readers, since they wouldn't show up as page views. Thanks for all the great info! Very helpful.

Thanks Matt for your feedback and yeah, I am not going to do anything on that one. I told Alison she needs to do a post on Wordpress for Dummies. Seriously, I am not dumb. BUT when it comes to WP, I have plenty of blond moments and just can't figure it out so am on Blogger. The redheaded step child of blogging I guess :)

Hey Matt,

Just confirming that you what you told me to do worked. Looks like I had two feeds, the one that automatically sets up with wordpress and the one I set up for Feedburner so I just forwarded them and now, when I log in, I can see the total number of subscribers which is cool!

Hey Shari, glad you are enjoying our stuff! It's funny, I've been thinking about writing posts about BOTH of your questions recently.

I always stressed over updates too, because I didn't know if I was backing up correctly and I was so scared I'd mess something up with the update. That's why I recommend Bluehost, because updating is one click. No FTP or any of that junk. As for backups, it's good that you're doing it, and I think using a plugin for it is a good way to go. You should also be saving your files (from FTP) occasionally, not just your database, and definitely before an update. I don't know if there's a plugin for that, do you have one?

And for comments, I don't know of a good answer. I've had the same problem myself with getting too many emails about comments when I ask to be notified. But I'd still like to write a post about commenting in general.

Thanks for your input and ideas for posts!

OMG Matt, I love this blog. You and Alison ROCK for sharing all this great info to help us out! I do have feedburner but not as a plugin, just as an account, so I'll have to start making some tweaks.

I've learned a lot already from reading here - I love the COMMENTLUV plugin and would never have known about it if I hadn't seen it in your comments area.

Do you think you might do a future post on backups and/or Wordpress Updates? I'm feeling a little paralyzed on the 2.8.5 update once I saw the ridiculous number of steps involved in making the update. I have two plugins for backups, but am scared to actually go through w/ 2.8.5 in case my backups haven't really captured what I need.

Another topic thought that maybe new bloggers like me struggle with (or maybe it's just me, I don't know!) ... keeping up on comments I make elsewhere. Is there some trick to that besides subscribing to comments? The first time I did that, that particular blog post got 80+ comments that all hit my email. I've been trying to find a way to capture comments I make elsewhere so I can keep up on replies that blogger might make to my note.

Sorry for the long comment! Have a great day!

Averie, I just don't know enough about Blogger (or feeds) to tell you for sure that nothing will go wrong. But... since you already have your own domain and your feed is working fine, it doesn't seem like burning a new one with Feedburner could mess anything up. When you use Feedburner to burn a feed, you do have to input your feed address, but as far as I know nothing happens to the old feed, it just burns a second one. So it doesn't sound like anything could get messed up. But I don't know much about redirecting to the new feed with Blogger... you might want to do some research on that before you try anything.

Christie, I'm looking at that now but I can't figure it out. I know when I burned a Feedburner feed the first time, it was so that I could get a "Subscribe by Email" link on my page. So until I updated my other "Subscribe" links (and later redirected the old feed to Feedburner), the Feedburner feed was ONLY being used for email subscribers and the other subscribers were getting the old feed. Make sense? Not that likely you are doing that, but check. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Great post....but.....
I am scared to freakin' death to do anything to mess with my feed! I own my domain and am on blogger and I personally know of a couple (recent) horror stories friends went thru when they purchased their blogger domain (as I did a few mos ago without issue) but their feed was/is still messed up in googlereader and I am of the if it aint broke, dont fix it mentality when it comes to something as imp as my feed.

Are you sure I have nothing to be scared of? :)

Thank you for this! I tried setting up Feedburner a while ago, but gave up because I thought it wasn't working (since I wasn't self-hosted). Now I realize it was because I put in my blog address instead of my feed address. What a simple mistake! Thanks again!
