Thanks for this post - it is really helpful! I'm a very new blogger considering foodbuzz and I have a really basic question... how do I create the ad space for their ads? Do i have to change my blogger settings or do they just send me their ads to put on my sidebar? These might be stupid questions but I don't really know how this process works once I sign the papers!

It's kind of funny... I suppose we as readers all have our different tastes. It was easy for me to match adsense text ads to my blog style by just clicking on the color scheme I wanted to use. For me personally, it seems less intrusive to have some text ads on the side of my blog, even if a few of them are about "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter". One thing I prefer about this kind of ad: It's easier to ignore, at least for me! My eyes aren't distracted by the text ads, unless a certain word does catch my attention. (I've found a few helpful links in some adsense ads...)
What IS distracting is the full length picture of some kitchen diva model posing next to an Electrolux Washing Machine in the Foodbuzz ad that's also appeared on my blog, running a full eight inches down the side of my blog! Ah, but I won't be renewing my contract with them this year; after two years with Foodbuzz, Adsense proved to work better for me. Plus, there have been changes to the Foodbuzz contract (that we insiders aren't allowed to discuss); those changes just aren't going to work for me. But hey, I suspect you're right on about the Foodbuzz ads working better for new foodie blogs. Thanks for your input!

Evan, I'm just getting into non-Foodbuzz advertising, so I'm try to figure that out myself. One thing you can do is use Foodbuzz's rate as a starting point. Figure out how many pageviews you expect in a month and what you'd earn from Foodbuzz for that many pageviews, and maybe you can use that to ballpark a monthly rate.

Of course, it depends on so many other things. What size ad, where you're putting the ad, how many other ads will be competing for readers' attention.

Wish I could help more with this. If I figure anything out myself, I'll let you know.

Can you give any sense for what a reasonable advertisement might be for a blog? I've had companies ask me what my rate would be to have their advertisement and I have no concept of what's reasonable in this scenario

Thanks for the info! I'm just getting into this blogging stuff, so it's helpful to learn from your experiences. I just got the foodbuzz papers too, so I'm trying to decide whether or not to join the program.

I have seen the Adsense discrepancies far too often on other blogs to fall for that one... Why would I "endorse" products that will make you miraculously lose 10 pounds per week, when I write exhaustively about slow, healthy and consistent weight loss?

I think, when it comes to ads, less is definitely more. Some blogs are so tricked out, you have to search for the content!
